Element:

8.b.i. [Mental element for Element 5] [Consequence of the infliction of severe physical or mental pain or suffering upon one or more persons]: The perpetrator meant to cause severe physical or mental pain or suffering upon one or more persons; OR

SCSL

About that element, the Taylor Trial Chamber found:

"The Trial Chamber finds that Tholley's evidence based on her own observations to be credible and finds beyond reasonable doubt rebels amputated the hands of an unknown number of men and women in January 1999. The Trial Chamber therefore finds beyond reasonable doubt that the perpetrators caused serious physical injury and suffering to the victims, and that the perpetrators evinced an obvious intention to cause such serious physical suffering and injury upon their victims."[1]
